- March 15, 2007 -- WASHINGTON - The feds have launched a massive new effort to identify and count the growing number of radical Islamic extremists who could attack America from within - with the first canvass already under way in New York, it was revealed yesterday.
Led by the Department of Homeland Security, investigators are targeting prisons, schools, mosques and even neighborhood bodegas as "nodes" where charismatic zealots troll for terror recruits, a top Homeland official told lawmakers.
It's the first time the sophisticated hunt has been made public.
Once the feds establish a "baseline" for the number of threatening Muslim radicals living here , they will create "radicalization indicators" to study whether danger from extremists is on the rise, Charles Allen, the chief intelligence officer at the DHS, told the Senate Homeland Security Committee.
The information will be compiled in a database the feds call the Homeland Secure Data Network.
The agency plans to share the information with local officials most likely to spot radicalization at its inception.
In sometimes ominous testimony, Allen warned, "We are concerned that radicalization will continue to expand within the United States over the long term."
He pointed to links between criminal and extremist networks in Europe, where Islamist terrorists have carried out attacks in the years since 9/11.
"Thus far, we have not seen these types of linkages between homegrown extremists and international terrorist groups in the United States - but we remain vigilant, and recognize that we are not immune to the threat," he said.
"There is a problem of homegrown terrorism here in the U.S. now. We're increasingly facing a threat from it," said Homeland Security Chairman Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.).
Asked how many radicals were identified in New York, Allen told The Post, "I don't have that kind of data - nor would I speak publicly of it."
Allen said the feds have identified university groups and small mosques as places where discontented people can gather.
