Commentary by Dr. Ursula A. Falk
We walk into our own destruction refusing to open our minds to the facts. As Jews we were generally Democrats by choice, as our voting records indicate.
- We adored Franklin Roosevelt and only learned years later that he turned away the boat St. Louis and forced Jews to be returned to Nazi Germany to be murdered mercilessly during World War II.
- Today we refuse to again review reality and cling to our outmoded beliefs. We help anti-Semitic minorities who preach against us in public, denouncing our right to live on this earth. With our Jewish money we support causes that are ready to destroy us, exhibiting pity for everyone but our own. We help the Farrakhans of our land; immigrants from third world countries like outer Palukastan; we support our enemies for political office and exhibit much more self destructive behavior, but what do we do for our brethren?
An outstanding article appeared in the February 13 Buffalo Jewish Review by Ed Koch, former mayor of New York, in which he explains the current political situation so aptly and concisely. He points out that we are now going through the most virulent anti-semitic period since Hitler and Stalin: Almost every country on the European continent, including England, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium and the Scandinavian countries, has seen major outbreaks of physical violence against Jewish citizens and against Jewish institutions, including synagogues and cemeteries. At the same time open hostility toward the State of Israel is at an all time high. Only in the United States have we seen a full acceptance of Jews as citizens and the Jewish State treated as a friend and ally. --- In one elite bastion after another, Jews have been selected to head institutions heretofore seen as beyond their reach.---------
I want to thank President George W. Bush and his advisers, Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice for their support of the State of Israel. They could easily have jettisoned Israel as a liability in their efforts to forge an international coalition against worldwide terrorism. I will be forever grateful to them, and I hope the many other supporters of the State of Israel will recognize and appreciate what they have done.
Koch goes on to say that he will avoid France as a place to vacation as they are the leading country in the UN Security Council that are the enemies of the State of Israel. So also is Mexico, since they denounce Israel. Koch will not support National Public Radio since they delight in attacking Israel. The same for the N.Y’s Channel 13, BBC News and Susan Sontag for her outrageous assaults on Israel. He will no longer read her books!
In conclusion, let us remember the late Reverend Niemoller’s final sermon (6/27/37) before he was sent to the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau: First they sent for the socialists and I did not speak out, because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me! Let this be a lesson for all of us: Let us help each other and those who speak for us and vote against our enemies and those who want to destroy the State of Israel and ourselves.
Shalom and lehitraot.
